Muni Woods Division

Woods is one of Muni's motor-coach yards, and it appears in the record mostly through the people who work out of it. The Budget Analyst's management audit of the railway counts nine staff in its yard office — the largest of any division — and its tables put Woods third in the system for special-duty operator assignments, behind Potrero and Green. The railway's own staff paper hands out its Maintenance Worker of the Month awards here repeatedly, including to the supervisor of the Woods body and paint shop, a 63-year-old described by his manager as dedicated to doing the job right the first time. Woods also supplied the city's competitor for the national bus roadeo: a driver from the division won the San Francisco championship at Candlestick Park and went on to compete against drivers from more than seventy-five North American transit systems. The division has been a place the public was invited into as well — the Municipal Railway Improvement Fund piloted its first division open house here, bringing operators, their families, residents and riders together, and the Citizens' Advisory Council heard the division's superintendent answer for service quality on the 37-Corbett. A renovation of the Woods motor coach division was added to the railway's federal programme of projects in 1999.
