What counts as non-market housing here?
The City of Vancouver’s non-market housing register: social, co-op and supportive housing buildings, run by non-profit societies, co-operatives, BC Housing, Metro Vancouver or the City. It lists 641 buildings, 581 of them completed; the figure is the homes in those completed buildings.
What is, and is not, on the register
The register has one date, its last update (September 1, 2026). A completed building carries the year it was first occupied, from 1958 on: the year menu and the rail count homes by that year. It lists the buildings standing today, so an early year shows today’s buildings that opened then, not the housing of that year. 3 completed buildings (125 homes) carry no year.
The register counts each building’s homes twice, by clientele and by design (studios to four bedrooms): 40,658 by clientele and 40,709 by design across all stages, different for 36 buildings. This page uses the clientele count throughout.
19 buildings have no point on the register: they have their page and are counted, but are not on the map.
How are homes per 1,000 residents counted?
Residents are the 2021 Census count (662,248 city-wide), summed over the census blocks the city map carries onto each local area. The rate sets homes against people, not against all homes. The 349 homes of 4 buildings the register places in no local area count only in the city-wide figure.
What the City paid the operators
When an operator is on the City’s payment schedules under the same organisation name — the key the Who gets paid page uses to join spellings — its row shows what the City paid that organisation in the year: supplier payments over $25,000 and grants, from the Statement of Financial Information. That is everything the organisation received from the City, not the City’s housing spending, and nothing is matched by guess: a name printed differently on the two lists is not joined. 33 of the 222 operators are on the schedules.
Is there a waiting list?
Not here. The City’s open data publishes no waiting list for non-market housing, and this page reads no other source for one.
