Data

The site's data files are derived from open data portals. Each keeps the licence of its most restrictive source.

  • Paris (Paris Open Data) and Recife (Dados Abertos)
    ODbL 1.0 ↗
Credit the source and Qipu. A derived database you redistribute must stay under ODbL.
  • French towns, Marseille and national data (DGFiP, OFGL, DECP, REI, national register of elected officials, INSEE's Sirene and population data, national register of associations, Fonds vert, Base Adresse Nationale, PLF, PLFSS, Ville de Marseille, Métropole Aix-Marseille-Provence)
    Etalab Open Licence 2.0 ↗
Credit the source in the form its producer asks for, for example “calcul OFGL - source DGFiP” or “Source : Insee”.
  • Towns' lists of grants, read from the annex of their budget documents (single financial account, administrative account or budget)
Documents published by each town; the licence is the one the town states, when it states one
Credit the town and the document (type, year). Each town's page links to the original PDF.
  • Eurostat
    CC BY 4.0 ↗
Credit Eurostat and state that the figures were reprocessed.
  • San Francisco (DataSF)
    PDDL ↗
    Public domain: no obligation.
  • Other US towns (public records of the states: Massachusetts, Indiana, Iowa, Florida, California) and federal data (Census Bureau, US Treasury)
Public records of each state (Iowa: CC BY); federal data: public domain
Credit the state or the agency that publishes the data.
  • Brazilian municípios (SICONFI accounts from the Tesouro Nacional, IBGE population, mayors from the TSE, PNCP contracts, read through Base dos Dados)
  • Vancouver (the City's open data portal and other sources)
Open Government Licence – Vancouver for the portal; the other sources each have their own ↗
Credit the City of Vancouver. The Statements of Financial Information have no open licence; the 1970s minutes are under CC0 or CC BY 3.0. Each dataset's licence is on the Vancouver sources page.

Licences for Paris, Recife, French data, Eurostat and DataSF checked on each portal on 13 September 2026; the other rows were added on 28 September 2026 from the source files of the processing code. Details per file folder (LICENSE.md)

  • Some short texts are written by a language model from the sources: the assistant's answers; the plain-language descriptions of Paris contracts, projects and grants (the “In practice” paragraphs); some of the readable titles of towns' public contracts (the others are rewritten by rules, without a model); the “What it does” sentences of associations, drawn from the purpose they declared to the national register of associations; the titles of the Council of Paris moments on place pages; the plain-language descriptions of San Francisco and Recife contracts, and the titles of Brazilian municípios' contracts. If you reuse them, please say they were written by AI.
  • Wikipedia extracts on place pages remain under CC BY-SA 4.0 ↗.
  • Each photo keeps the licence shown in its credit.
