The City’s places

68 landmarks we chose among the places the City owns, runs or funds: theatres, museums, the Central Library, parks and beaches, community centres and pools, City Hall, the bridges. A place is in only when a published record ties City money to it; it is a selection, and it grows. The City’s seven registers (community centres, libraries, fire halls, parks, cultural spaces, shelters, non-market housing) are in the list too: the search, the families and the neighbourhoods find them.

Two things, added up. The grants the City paid to the organisation that runs the place, as its Statements of Financial Information print them (2011–2025); what the City pays the same organisation for goods and services is not counted. And the place’s works, counted once: the new capital budgets council approved for programs whose name names the place (2021–2026), or the contracts the City awarded whose description names it (2013–2025), whichever is larger — a contract is paid out of a budget, so the two are never added up. A budget is money approved, not money spent. A record that names two landmarks counts for the one it names first. What the City spends itself to run a place (staff, upkeep) is not broken down place by place.
