Sharp Park

Sharp Park is San Francisco's park in another county. The city's property registers list it plainly among the holdings outside the city limits — with the airport, Hassler Hospital, Log Cabin Ranch School and the county jail, all in San Mateo County — and it has raised the obvious question ever since: the City Attorney's index of letter opinions carries one on the authority of the Recreation and Park Commission to lease the golf course to the municipality of Pacifica, and another on its concessionaire. The park has been run at arm's length for a long time. The Board of Park Commissioners' minutes of the 1940s deal with the disposition of the Sharp Park camp buildings and with a rent increase for the Sharp Park golf professional, in the same resolution series as the one for Lincoln Park. Its other use has faded entirely: the department's annual report for the early 1960s counts the Sharp Park rifle range among its miscellaneous facilities, at 10,747 for the period, and records that it opened at weekends for the Northern California Junior Rifle League, a state championship and a national junior sectional. The golf course's irrigation appears as a bond project under the Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks programme, and two payments name the park directly — $44,042.22 to the state Department of Toxic Substances Control and $43,255 to the engineering firm Moffatt & Nichol.
