What total compensation includes

Salary ($4.9B), overtime ($513.4M), other pay ($283.9M) and benefits ($1.8B), per person and per year, as the Controller publishes them: $7.5B in FY2026. The benefits are $743.3M retirement, $725.7M health and dental, and $340.2M other benefits. “Retirement” is the Controller’s own column; the data does not say which plan it pays into.

Who is counted?

Everyone paid through the Controller’s payroll in the fiscal year, part-time and part-year staff included: each person counts once, whatever their hours. Pay is salary, overtime, other pay and benefits.

How is the median worked out?

Each person’s pay is first added up across their jobs and departments; the median is the middle of those totals.

Why are small groups left out?
