Castro Mission Health Center

Castro Mission Health Center — District Health Center No. 1 before it was renamed — is where the city placed some of its most specific clinical work. A 1996 guide to AIDS clinical trials lists the centre as a trial site, its own nurses and physicians named alongside the San Francisco VA Medical Center and UCSF. Two years later the Department of Public Health's annual report records that the Community Health Network, working with several community-based agencies, established the Dimensions Clinic here: San Francisco's first bilingual English and Spanish clinic for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning young people, offering comprehensive primary care, mental health and substance abuse services, health education and peer support. The centre's staff have argued for that model in public too — before a Health Commission joint conference committee in 2000, a clinician from Castro-Mission thanked the department for planning from a community-based perspective, said services should not be driven by payor source, and pressed for infrastructure and capacity-building at community clinics. The building itself was substantially renovated under a $5 million permit covering partial interior works, an exterior seismic upgrade and landscape improvement, with air conditioning added the same year and a new roof permitted in 2025.
