Maxine Hall Health Center

Maxine Hall Health Center is the Western Addition's district clinic — District Health Center No. 2 before it was renamed — and the department's records show what a small clinic carries. Health Commission statistics for November 1996 count 4,705 encounters there in a single month: 512 medical, 1,330 nursing and 2,863 dental, podiatry, mental health and social work, the heaviest non-medical load of any district centre that month. The department's annual report describes the centre working to reduce the pregnancy rate in the Western Addition through comprehensive primary care, sexual health services and community outreach; beginning mammography re-screening for women over 50; and teaming its primary care providers with the University of California, San Francisco's Psychosocial Medicine Division to run groups — one of them called "Body and Soul", for stress reduction and anger management — reaching more than 400 patients who would probably not otherwise have sought help for mental health problems. In 1999 the Board of Supervisors authorised the centre to accept a $25,000 grant from the Family Violence Prevention Fund for a domestic violence prevention project. The building's own renovation went out to bid in 2002: new examination rooms, remodelled toilet rooms, new floors and finishes, mechanical and electrical work, and a new exterior ramp and curb ramp.
