Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital

Zuckerberg San Francisco General is the city's trauma centre and its safety-net hospital, and a great deal of public money is traceable to it by name: $237.9 million paid to vendors on contracts that name the hospital, alongside $130.9 million of voter-bond money expended on Building 5. The contracts show what running a hospital costs beside the rebuilding — $32.3 million paid to Clark Construction for chillers and cooling towers, $11.2 million for security guards, $4.1 million for hospital beds, $2.6 million to rent a chiller, $1.9 million for laboratory testing, $2.7 million for office supplies. The documents put that spending in context. A Controller's performance and efficiency review found the hospital at or near the top of a benchmark range for clinical quality in heart attacks, heart failure, pneumonia and the prevention of surgical infection, judged it productive and financially well run against comparable hospitals, and recorded an occupancy rate of 97 percent. A 1994 study of programmes affecting homeless people costed its treatment of patients who gave no address and had no third-party payer at $9,111,149 in a single year, most of it state money. And its institutional master plans track what it kept asking for: a medical helipad, which the Health Commission requested a feasibility study for after the 2001 trauma care plan exposed the city's geographic isolation; new emergency generator capacity; and a new acute care hospital.
